Meet the Co-Founders of LIT

Hi! We’re Melissa Parks and Sonia Jaeger, co-founders of Location Independent Therapists, admins of the LIT Facebook group, and longtime pioneers in the world of online therapy and location-independent work.

We were building portable, online practices long before the pandemic made remote work more common — and before many professional frameworks or regulations had caught up. Back then, resources were nearly nonexistent, and we know firsthand how confusing and isolating it can be to figure out things like licensing, logistics, and legal considerations across borders. That’s why we’ve spent the last several years creating the kind of support systems we wish we’d had when we started.

Since then, we’ve supported hundreds of therapists and helping professionals from around the world — many of whom came to us with the same mix of uncertainty, curiosity, and ambition. We’ve heard their questions, shared our experiences, and helped them take meaningful steps forward.

As moderators of the free LIT Facebook group (with over 12,000 members), and co-leaders of the paid LIT Community, we’re committed to holding space for honest conversations, sharing what we know, and connecting therapists with reliable support — especially in a field where so much information is scattered, outdated, or unclear.

We may not have all the answers for your specific situation — and we’re not offering legal or licensing advice — but we have talked to people in similar shoes, and we know how valuable it can be to speak with someone who understands the big picture and the emotional weight of these decisions.

These 50-minute consultations are a down-to-earth, practical first step — a chance to talk through your ideas, worries, or questions with someone who’s been on a similar path.

About Melissa Parks

Melissa has a PhD in Clinical & Health Psychology from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and has spent over a decade working online with the globally mobile community, offering therapy, expat coaching, and teaching Mindful Self-Compassion courses.

Originally from the U.S., she lived and worked for several years in Spain and the Netherlands, where she navigated the complexities of licensing and having cross-cultural practice. These experiences deepened her appreciation for working across cultures and connecting with mental health professionals around the world. After returning to the U.S., Melissa transitioned from therapy to coaching, but she continues to support globally mobile clients, including fellow mental health professionals who want to build aligned, sustainable, and location-independent practices.

Melissa knows firsthand how daunting it can be to pursue an “out of the box” path – whether that means working online, living abroad, serving expat clients, shifting into coaching, or all of the above. Finding community early on with like-minded therapists around the globe, including her accountability partner turned co-founder Sonia Jaeger, gave her the clarity and support to carve out her own path.

As a co-founder of the LIT Community, Melissa now offers that same support and mentorship to others — and is looking forward to hearing more about your own journey. Find out more about Melissa here.

About Sonia Jaeger

For over a decade, Sonia has combined her passion for mental health with a digital nomad lifestyle — long before remote therapy became mainstream. After completing her PhD and working as a licensed psychologist and psychotherapist in Germany, she chose a different path: building an online business that lets her live and work across continents.

Today, she supports cross-cultural individuals through online counselling, offers workshops and talks, and coaches other therapists navigating the shift to location-independent work. She runs her multilingual practice (in German, French, and English) with a small remote team and multiple income streams — all while rarely staying in one place for more than a few months at a time.

Early on, Sonia found that surrounding herself with like-minded colleagues made all the difference — including her accountability partner turned co-founder, Melissa Parks. Together they created the LIT Community over five years ago to fill the gap in support and connection for therapists working outside traditional models.

Sonia knows how isolating and confusing this path can be, especially when colleagues respond with fear or doubt. These consultations offer a grounded space to ask questions, explore possibilities, and talk things through with someone who truly gets it. Find out more about Sonia here.
