Why Nina Chose to Become a Location Independent Therapist
Watch the short interview (10 mins) below to hear more about Nina’s path to location independence and her journey so far!
Introducing Nina Uffelmann, a German Psychologist Based in Denmark
Nina is a German psychologist based in Denmark. She is also a mother of twins and loves spending time in the ocean surfing.
Nina works exclusively online, providing counselling via video calls. She works with individuals facing relationship problems, challenges with transitions, parenthood and successfully coping with everyday life.
Her clients are based both inside and outside of Germany, and with most of them she speaks in German, with a few in English. Within her work, Nina uses different techniques, including techniques from the person-centred approach, Gottman Method Couples Therapy, and Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT).
Why did Nina choose to become a location independent therapist?
Nina always knew that she didn’t want to base herself in Germany. As an avid surfer, the surf opportunities (and the waves) just didn’t meet her needs, so she looked elsewhere.
But as a trained psychologist, Nina wanted to find a solution that allowed her to continue the work she loved in a more surf-friendly location.
It was around this time that Nina came across the LIT co-founder Sonia Jaeger online. Sonia had already been working as a location independent therapist for several years, so Nina took this as proof that it was definitely possible to do! And so, she decided to make it happen and become a location independent therapist, too.
What does Nina enjoy most about being a location independent therapist?
Nina loves the freedom and flexibility of working for herself as a location independent therapist. She can set her own work schedule, which means she can hit the surf in the morning when it’s less busy. And then, she can work in her evenings once her children are asleep.
Another benefit is that Nina can decide what she wants to offer and with whom she works. She can travel when she wants and take her clients with her.
And of course, Nina finds the work she does very fulfilling, interesting, and sometimes challenging. She enjoys the contact she gets with her clients and doing important work to support them.
What is Nina’s advice to anyone looking to become a location independent therapist?
Are you considering becoming a location independent therapist or switching to an online practice? Then, Nina has some advice for you!
First of all, you’ll need to have lots of patience! Starting and growing a business takes time, so don’t set yourself too high expectations, especially for the first year.
And also, make sure that you get help along the way! Nina has found the LIT Community so useful, both for knowing what steps to take in her business but also for the support she gets on our case supervision calls and during our other events.
